South Dakota ranks among the top U.S. states for corn, soybean, wheat, and beef cattle production. The James River Valley counties of Brown, Spink, and Beadle anchor the state's row crop economy. Western South Dakota — the West River country — runs primarily wheat, cattle, and the historic ranches that span the Black Hills and the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Eastern South Dakota supports dairy alongside the row crop operations of Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Yankton counties. The Sandhills extend up from Nebraska into the southwestern South Dakota cattle country.
Tractor donations from South Dakota heavily feature John Deere row crop tractors and combines from the James River Valley and eastern corn belt, Case IH high-horsepower equipment from larger operations, and New Holland balers and hay equipment from West River cattle country. Vintage Farmall, Allis-Chalmers, Oliver, and Minneapolis-Moline tractors from South Dakota's homestead-era farming accepted on the same terms as modern equipment. Equipment from retired operations across the state regularly donated.
From large row crop tractors to compact utility units, combines to skid steers, every type of agricultural equipment donated from South Dakota is accepted — running or not, with attachments or bare, stored in a field or in a barn.
TractorDonations.org runs pickup across South Dakota. Eastern routes include Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Yankton, and Brookings. James River Valley coverage runs through Aberdeen, Huron, and Watertown. West River and Black Hills pickup includes Rapid City, Spearfish, Pierre, and Belle Fourche. Sandhills and southwestern coverage extends through Winner and Mission. Lowboy transport handles the large equipment common in the state.
